Crash landings, faulty engines, lightning strikes, drunken passengers, shonky owners, heroic pilots - Ross Isaacson has seen them all; and from what he reckons is the best seat in the house. After 33 years criss-crossing Australia in almost anything that flies, 'Rossco' lays back and takes a tongue-in-cheek look at commercial aviation over almost four decades. Sacked one day, employed the next he takes us on a rollicking flight from his early days in gliding to piloting commuter and freight aircraft in the remotest corners of the country. His lively anecdotes embrace everyone from check-in chicks and refuellers to chief pilots and owners plus star characters such as George Harrison and Tom Jones. There are harsh words for the shonks and warm praise for the good guys - and always with Aussie larrikin wit and humour. Rossco's jargon-free recollections open a fresh window on to a vital part of Australian life beyond the capital cities. The tale is interspersed with his sketches and pithy poems plus a host of photographs taken from his tiny office with the greatest views in Australia.

In this light-hearted memoir, Ross Isaacson comes across as rather like some pilots I have known and admired---on the ground, an apparently devil-may-care cowboy, in the air a meticulously careful, safety-conscious professional. It's clear that he loved his job and loved the people he worked with (well, most of them). After starting his flying career as a glider pilot, he turned professional and logged 18,000 hours over 33 years, flying mostly twin-engine commuter aircraft all over his corner of Australia. This is the kind of flying that puts pilots in close touch with the vagaries of weather and mechanical failures, from which the pilots of big jets are mostly insulated. His flying included long stretches without radar coverage and entailed making what are called NDB approaches---about the hardest kind to pull off successfully in rotten weather.
Isaacson is not a professional writer, and it shows. But the reader gets caught up in the story and the string of anecdotes. All in all, a good read. As to Isaacson's brand of humor---well you be the judge.
